This listing is for a vintage MICHIGAN STATE CREAMERY quart bottle. From it's humble beginnings with their first cow arriving on the Michigan State Campus in 1867; the program grew to opening an on campus dairy which produced ice cream, chocolate milk, cream, cottage cheese, buttermilk and butter, along with white milk. The Michigan State Dairy operated until 1968. This quart bottle reflects the scope of what this college campus dairy supplied their cafeteria and they also offered these products to the the community via the Dairy Store and truck delivery. In 1968 the dairy closed for a variety of reasons. However, in the late 1980's Michigan State University received a $5.5 million from the Animal Agriculture Initiative to renovate the Michigan State Dairy Plant which still supplies ice cream and cheese to students and members of the community. There have only been a handful of universities colleges which provide full dairy studies which provide dairy farming and husbandry programs which typically include in depth instruction in basic animal and dairy science; animal husbandry; design and operation of dairy feeding, housing and processing facilities and equipment; dairy animal nutrition and health and related issues of safety, shipping and handling, sanitation and applicable regulations. Michigan State was one of the first and is still one of the few. This bottle stands 9 1/2" tall x 4 1/2" across at the bottom. Deep green lettering in script and block lettering would be eye catching against the bottle filled with white milk! It is a unique milk bottle in the sense that there were/and still are only a few college dairies which produced bottled milk. Truly a bit of history!This bottle is in very good to excellent condition. It is crystal clean, with no staining, cloudiness, chips or cracks. Here is a very scarce, steel, approx 13" tall and 8" diameter at base, I believe 2 gallon size, cream can, with raised lettering on body: MSC Creamery. This is from MICHIGAN STATE COLLEGE in East Lansing, Michigan. From sometime between 1925 and 1955, in which year the name was changed to Michigan State University. Very Hard to Find cream can. You find the bottles, but to find the cream can is difficult. Has been brushed down with a wire brush and then painted green with the raised lettering painted white. Condition: When acquired the can had some rust. Can was brushed down with a wire brush and then painted. No holed or other damage. Has no lid. See pictures above for best description.
