Looks like they glued it together but would still make a great display piece on one side. It measures 18” tall and 8” length and width. Weighs almost 15#.I was able to combine in one larger box. Exceptionally rare and historically important, original 1885 United States Patent Office Model of a new and improved Tin Disk and Strap Lid for Closing Milk Bottles that allowed the bottle to be sealed shut using a wax seal to prevent tampering with the milk. This Milk Bottle related Patent Model retains its original US Patent Office Patent Tag and Submission Tag and uses an example of the Charles deQuillfeldt Tin Lid for Milk Bottles that was patented in 1875 and is considered to be the first bottle-related patent connected with the dairy industry. This important and quite ingenious metal wire Milk Bottle Closure, American Patent Model includes a ca1875 Louis Whitman patent Milk Bottle believed to be the very first bottle made to specifically hold Milk that was patented in the United States. The Milk Bottle and tin lid measures approx. 9” tall and 3 1/2” in diameter at the base. The bottom of the Bottle is marked “Whitman” and the back side of the Bottle features text that reads “This Bottle to be Washed and Returned”. The Bottle retains the Charles deQuillfeldt Tin Lid for Milk Bottles which carries the patent date of January 5, 1875. The Patent Model offered here is an exact representation of an improved design for a metal / wire closure for Milk Bottles that would allow for a wax seal to apply to guarantee that the bottle had not been tampered with before it reached the retail customer. This invention was patented in 1885 by Jones W. Wilder of Parkville, New York. The patent papers are titled simply "Sealing Milk Bottles". Offered here is the original Patent Model of this ingeniously designed, Milk Bottle closure. It features a tin disk that fits over the top of a Milk Bottle that is held in place by a wire strap mechanism. The wire strap that holds the lid tightly in place was held in place by a raised arc applied to the surface of the Bottle that allowed the lid to be sealed in place by a wax sealing material. The Model of a new design for a Milk Bottle lid closure which is offered here was actually the original Patent Model - submitted to the US Patent Office by the inventor Jones W. Wilder of Parkville, New York. It came to us with the original Patent Office Tag as well as the original Submission Tag and we unconditionally guarantee this to be the Original Model submitted to the Patent Office. The invention was issued Patent Number 311,932 on February 10, 1885. This Model of a new design for Tin, Sealing Closure for Milk Bottles was submitted to the U. S. Patent Office as part of the Patent Application Process. This very rare and fascinating, Patent Model is in very good condition. The Model is near complete and intact. It includes the original, Whitman Patent, 1 Quart Milk Bottle and the original, 1875 Charles deQuillfeldt Tin Lid for Milk Bottles. The Patent Model lacks the raised rib attachment below the lip of the Bottle that would hold the wire bale in place and provide a recessed area where a wax seal could be applied to seal the bottle closed, however, there are significant remnants of the adhesive that held the raised ribs in place on the surface of the Bottle (see the scans below). Otherwise the Patent Model is complete and well preserved with no damage or repairs to the very rare ca1875 Louis Whitman patent Milk Bottle or to the 1875 Charles deQuillfeldt Tin Lid for Milk Bottles. As stated above, the Model retains its original Patent Office Tag along with its original Submission Tag and we will also include a modern copy of the original patent papers downloaded from the U. S. Patent Office records!! We have not cleaned up the Model (the Bottle is somewhat soiled) and offer it "as found" thus leaving any cleaning to the winning bidder.
